Hi!
Do you ever think, "What could I do online?"
What I hear the most from people over 50 considering freelancing to continue earning, use their wisdom and knowledge, and stay engaged and purposeful is, 'What can I do?' Whether they’ve had the same career for 30+ years or multiple jobs, that question comes up repeatedly.
I’ve spoken to and worked with people in various careers—doctors, nurses, teachers, academic leaders, attorneys, small business owners, government employees, and those in transition. No matter their background, the same question arises.
Some of the unknowns about freelancing come from not fully understanding what it is beyond the broad terms like “working online” or “working remotely.” It’s one of those things that sounds simple in theory, but when it comes to actual practice, many feel unsure of where to begin.
Here are some interesting statistics:
➡️ 26% of baby boomers participate in freelance work.
➡️ World Bank data shows that 46.7% of the global workforce is self-employed.
➡️ As of 2024, there are an estimated 76.4 million freelancers in the U.S.
➡️ By 2027, 50+% of Americans will be in the gig economy.
Freelancing: A Bridge to Achieving Your Personal and Professional Goals
People often put off spending time with their families, traveling, living abroad, and other goals for "later" or when they have “enough.” How about instead of viewing work and retirement as two separate phases of life, freelancing can be your “slow go” tactic and be a bridge that helps you achieve your goals now?
Beyond staying connected and purposeful, there’s an essential financial reality: many of you must continue earning some income. While it may not have to be as much as when you were raising a family, stopping work entirely while potentially living another 20+ years can be a tall order.
Freelancing allows you to continue generating income, helping you maintain the quality of life you want without the pressures of a traditional career or job.
Digital work offers the flexibility, community, and income needed to pursue your goals and hobbies. It also benefits organizations and the economy because professionals with experience continue contributing valuable skills and knowledge.
So, the question remains: What can you do as a freelancer?
The answer comes with reflection and guidance. Reflecting on your skills, experiences, and interests. Here are a few steps to help you figure out how to bring your talents into the freelance world.
✅ Start with identifying your job skills and talents
Start by reflecting on your work history and accomplishments. What have you done that stands out? Ask yourself:
What skills allowed me to succeed?
What skills do I excel at naturally? What tasks do I enjoy doing the most?
Which skills have I been complimented on by colleagues or supervisors?
✅ Next, consider your strengths and recognition at work
Another way to uncover potential freelance opportunities is to look at the recognition you’ve received in your career. Consider:
Have I been promoted or received raises during my career?
What strengths are highlighted in my performance reviews?
Have I been recognized through any awards or special programs?
✅ Just as important, explore your hobbies and interests
Freelancing doesn’t have to be tied to your previous career. Your hobbies and interests can also provide valuable freelance opportunities. Ask yourself:
What hobbies or personal interests am I passionate about?
Have I received awards or recognition outside of work?
What volunteer work have I done, and what skills did I use there?
The freelance world is vast and full of opportunities, and you embody many skills and talents—some of which you may not even realize you have. In an online world with over 200,000 jobs, tasks, and projects covering over 10,000 skills, you can continue earning while living the life you’ve been waiting for.
Why stop engaging when your wisdom and knowledge are valued and you can continue to provide them where and when you want?
