Hi,
If you're over 50 and dreaming of traveling more or even moving abroad, one big question always comes up: How will I afford it?
Every week, I talk to people who are curious about freelancing as a way to earn supplemental income.
Some are pulled by possibility — freedom to travel, live abroad, or have choices.
Others are pushed by reality — job insecurity, ageism, or the hard truth that their savings won't stretch another 30+ years.
Here are the top 5 questions I get most often and the honest answers I give:
1️⃣ Am I too old to start freelancing?
No. Your experience, skills, and work ethic are assets.
Clients value reliability, good judgment, problem-solving, and on-time delivery — qualities you've built over decades.
Age isn't a barrier. Refusing to adapt is.
2️⃣ What skills do I have that are valuable online?
Far more than you think.
Writing. Teaching. Administration. Sales. Bookkeeping. Healthcare knowledge. Project management. Customer service, IT, and many more.
There are 8,000+ skills represented on talent marketplaces, and all can be delivered online.
The key is reframing what you already know into services clients need, no matter where you live.
3️⃣ Can I earn enough money?
Yes — if your goal is supplemental income.
Most people I work with (myself included) aren't replacing a career. They're creating an extra $500–$2,000/month to:
Close the gap in retirement savings
Stave off collecting SS for longer
Have a backup in a rocky job market
Make travel possible
Support a move abroad where the cost of living is lower.
Sometimes, just $1,000/month is the difference between stress and breathing room.
4️⃣ Where do I even start?
Start small. Start structured.
Assess your skills. Note: Roles and titles are not the same as skills.
Choose one service you can offer right now.
Build a simple profile on a talent platform. You aren't stuck with this. You can change your skill set at any time.
Apply for short, easy jobs to build momentum.
Note: The goal isn't perfection. It's progress. Once you begin, freelancing is work you can take with you anywhere from your kitchen table to a café in Spain 😊, to a rental in Costa Rica.
5️⃣ What if I'm scared of the technology?
You're not alone. Almost everyone over 50 feels this way at first.
But learning tech is more accessible than ever. If you've adapted to new systems at work before, you can understand this too.
You don't need to master it all. Just enough to take the first step. Confidence grows with small wins.
For many of us, it's not just about money.
It's about living with confidence and more control. It's about feeling confident, clear, and purposeful.
And yes, it's about having the freedom to travel or even relocate abroad.
What I teach:
How to use the skills you already have to earn supplemental income online.
I don't promise a full-time salary; that would be unrealistic. I promise you'll learn a new, valuable skill that will move you beyond scarcity, survival, and uncertainty to confidence, more peace, and clarity while at home, traveling extensively, or living abroad.
If one of these questions hits home for you, maybe now's the time to explore what's possible.
It's not getting any easier out there.

Jeanne
